Wind Turbine FAQs

How much will it cost to buy?

  1. £25k-£50k installed
  2. 6kW model - £25k-£30k
  3. 15kW model - £45k-£50k

Do you have finance available?

Yes.

How much electricity will it produce?

  1. 6kW = 7,500 kWh-18,500 kWh/yr
  2. 15kW = 24,000- 62,000 kWh/yr approximately

How do I sell excess energy?

  1. 6kW = 7,500 kWh-18,500 kWh/yr
  2. 15kW = 24,000- 62,000 kWh/yr approximately

How much land do I need?

Should be at least 20 metres from house/obstructions.

How much will I get for the energy sold back to the electricity company?

Up to 10p per kWh

  1. 1,000 kWh = 1 ROC
  2. 1 ROC = £45-£52 each

Do I need to set that up with the electricity companies?

Yes, they are all different and it is entirely up to you who you do business with.  We can help with this.

What are ROCs?

Renewable Obligation Certificates. This is what you sell your electricity as.

1 ROC=1000kwh.

Are turbines reliable?

98.4% reliable.

What warranty will you give?

Up to 5 years.

Do you have a maintenance service?

Yes, around £500 per annum.

Is it noisy?

No, less than a car passing 20 metres away at 40mph.

How do I find out my current electricity usage?

Check your electricity bill or contact your electricity company.

If I decide to buy a turbine, what’s the next step?

Call us on 01560 700 574 and arrange a site survey.

What planning permission do I need?

Local planning permission - councils support renewable energy.

Do I need an architect to draw up plans?

Only in certain circumstances and where required, we would organise all of that for you.

Are all these charges included in the price?

Yes, we will give complete price after site survey.

How long will it take to pay for itself?

Our 15kW turbines - between 5-10 years and our 6kW turbines - between 8-15 years, depending on wind speed, any tax savings and grants available.

Best location for wind turbine?

We recommend the turbine to be sited away from obstructions at a 1:10m height ratio.  Height of Building 10m turbine should be 100m away from building.

How long will turbine last?

The design life of a Proven turbine is 25 years, but may well last longer if properly maintained.

Why does everyone not have a turbine before now?

Because electricity prices have risen significantly in recent years and the value of ROCs have increased too.  These in turn bring down the payback period.

Can I erect it myself?

No, it must be done by an approved installer, but some ground works can be carried out by the customer to an agreed high standard

How do I sell excess energy?

You would set up a contract will be set up with an electricity company.

What is metres per second converted to miles per hour?

  1. 5 metres per second = 11.8 mph
  2. 6 metres per second = 13.42 mph
  3. 7 metres per second = 15.65 mph
  4. 8 metres per second = 17.89 mph
  5. 9 metres per second = 20.13 mph

Preparing the Base Foundation

The base foundation consists of approximately 16.5m3 of strong-mix concrete (35 Newton). Normally this is prepared as a rough 3.7 x 3.7 x 1.2m cube, but where ground conditions dictate, a shallower wider foundation of the same volume may be used.
